I asked him to apply the "page 69 test" to his new book. Here is what he reported:
Page 69 is and is not representative of The Triumph of the Thriller. It isn't in that most of the book is devoted to my commentary on writers, including Thomas Harris, Michael Connelly, George Pelecanos, Dennis Lehane, Sue Grafton, Alan Furst and Elmore Leonard, among many others. None of them is discussed on page 69, which is the start of a chapter called "The Birth of the Thriller." On that page I discuss some of the events in the 1960s and 1970s -- the Kennedy assassination, Vietnam, Watergate -- that began to change and darken our popular culture. This new mood, I say, was reflected in the songs of Bob Dylan, the writings of Norman Mailer and Hunter Thompson and in movies like "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Taxi Driver." I don't get to it on page 69, but I go on to say that it is also reflected in books like The Godfather, In Cold Blood, The Silence of the Lambs and The First Deadly Sin that are a great deal more ambitious and disturbing than the mysteries and even the private-eye novels of earlier decades. I wouldn't mind if someone picked up the book and started at page 69 -- I suspect they'd turn the page -- but I would nonetheless prefer that they start on page 1.Many thanks to Patrick for the input.
Read an excerpt from The Triumph of the Thriller and a briefer adapted essay.
Publishers Weekly praised the book:
The reader who isn't a thriller fan but is curious about this enormously popular genre couldn't ask for a better introduction than Anderson's lively and informative survey. Anderson, the Washington Post weekly thriller reviewer and self-described "middlebrow," explains why the genre has come to dominate bestseller lists in recent years: "Decades of war, recession, and political and corporate corruption have made Americans more cynical—or realistic—and thus more open to novels that examine the dark side of our society." Then he quickly covers the 19th-century pioneers (Poe, Collins, Conan Doyle) and the early 20th-century greats (Christie, Hammett, Chandler). The book hits its stride with a chapter on the modern thriller's birth in the 1980s. The author champions such contemporary writers as Thomas Harris, George P. Pelecanos, Michael Connelly and Dennis Lehane, but isn't afraid to condemn the work of such bestsellers as James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell. While the generous plot descriptions might spoil a novel like The Silence of the Lamb for those who have never read Harris, this personal, opinionated guide will satisfy even those well versed in the genre.Among the books Patrick recently reviewed in the Washington Post:
