I've read all her books and wouldn't think of starting anywhere but page 1. Nevertheless, I asked Laura, what would a newbie find out by opening the book to page 69?
When you first asked me to take the page 69 test, I applied it to my forthcoming novel, What the Dead Know. To my amazement, it includes a crucial clue to the mystery at the heart of the novel, a tiny detail that I want readers to glide by. In fact, I was so unnerved by this that I put off participating in the Page 69 project and, with your permission, I won't quote from a single line, as I think readers will assume that I'm skipping the notorious detail, or using it in a clever reverse twist, or . . . well, you see the dilemma. Many thanks to Laura for the input.
The larger dilemma is that while the next book has a twist of sorts, I don't care if anyone figures out what's going on. In fact, I'm rather worried that the twist will be over-emphasized, that the tail will wag the dog. Yes, it's a crime novel, powered by a single question -- Who is this woman? -- but it's my hope that readers will find a larger story of identity within its pages, a novel about how so many of us fail to see the people right in front of us.
But does the novel pass the page 69 test? I haven't a clue.
The publisher hasn't yet revealed much about What the Dead Know--sorry, no excerpt--but Laura has dropped a hint here and there, including:
Have you read Jane Eyre recently? A character in my next novel is immersed in it, and the choice was a careful one, because of the section in which Jane flees Thornfield and takes on a false identity, only to find that the kind people who take her in are cousins. Oh, and then she learns that she has just received an inheritance that, once shared with her cousins, will allow her to save their house.Last summer found Laura "On the Bubble" at Murderati.
