Pg. 69: "The Dying Crapshooter's Blues"

The Dying Crapshooter's Blues is David Fulmer's latest novel.

I asked him to apply the "page 69 test" to his book. Here is what he reported:
I guess I lucked out.

In the case of The Dying Crapshooter's Blues, page 69 is a confrontation between the protagonist, Joe Rose, and his nemesis Grayton Jackson, known by one and all as "the Captain." The two men have some history, because the police have never been able to nab Joe for any of the thefts he's committed around the city. So that antagonism is playing in the background.

Joe has been dragged into police headquarters for a grilling about the jewel theft that started the book. We have no idea at this point whether or not he is involved. The Captain suspects him, though; or at least thinks he knows something about the crime.

They have just finished a verbal duel as we reach the top of the page. As he's being ushered out, Joe asks the Captain about the shooting of Little Jesse Williams, the "dying crapshooter" of the title, which took place on an Atlanta street two nights before. This is the book's other storyline.

So you have both significant plot lines and two sides of the triangle of the main characters - the other being Pearl Spencer - in the first skirmish of the battle that plays out through the next 250 pages.

Lucky 69.
Many thanks to David for the input.

Read an excerpt from the novel and listen to Kacey Kowars' interview with David.

Read Patrick Anderson's rave review, "How '23 Is Greater Than '24'," in the Washington Post.

Among other praise for the novel:
"Rich in historical detail, infused with atmosphere, suspenseful and action-packed... Earns this month's Tip of the Ice Pick Award."
--Bruce Tierney, BookPage

"A heady brew of crime and punishment on Prohibition Atlanta, the novel features an eccentric cast of colorful characters: Little Jesse Williams and his ladies-of-the-night, the blind musician, the riotous speak-easies, the exotic Pearl, and the hard-nosed Chief of Detectives.... Once more, Fulmer brings an era vividly to life, the sweet notes of The Dying Crapshooter’s Blues sliding through the night."
--Curled Up With A Good Book

"An intriguing tale of police corruption, covetousness, conspiracy, and crime."
--The Tennesseean

"Four stars!"
--Paste Magazine
David is also author of the acclaimed Storyville mysteries featuring Creole detective Valentin St. Cyr. The first volume of the series, Chasing the Devil's Tail, was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Mystery/Thriller Book Prize and the winner of the Shamus Award for Best First P.I. Novel.
