Ann Beattie's 6 favorite books

Ann Beattie's new book is Mrs. Nixon: A Novelist Imagines a Life.

One of Beattie's six favorite books, as told to The Week magazine:
Dubliners by James Joyce

This collection's final story, "The Dead," is usually agreed to be Joyce's best. Why do writers love it? In part because of the sheer brilliance of the language in the ending's epiphany, which is utterly unparaphrasable.
Read about another book on the list.

Dubliners is one of Ciarán Hinds's six best books.
