Bill was good enough to put the new novel to "page 69 test." Here's what he found:
On page 69 of his latest adventure, Sheriff Dan Rhodes is sneaking around his house, hoping to conceal from his wife the evidence that he’s recently been attacked by a man with a chainsaw. Rhodes hides his ruined shirt in the trash and swabs alcohol on his back with no witness other than a cat he’s recently acquired. Many thanks to Bill for the input.
When I read this page again, I thought about how many times poor Sheriff Rhodes has been attacked in one way or another. He’s had people come after him with giant weed-whackers. He’s been gored by feral pigs, he’s been shot at more than a few times, and he’s been in plenty of fistfights. As often as not, he winds up in the hospital.
Someone told me once that he wished Rhodes didn’t get beaten up so often because he identifies me with the sheriff. If it’s any comfort to my readers, I’ve never been shot at or attacked by some guy with a chainsaw. I’ve seen feral pigs, but I gave them a wide berth. Writing books, it turns out, isn’t nearly as hazardous as being a character in one of them, and in the long run, it’s a lot more fun.
Read the Texas Monthly review.
Publishers Weekly loved Murder Among the OWLS and Kirkus gave it a pretty good review, too.
Ed Gorman profiled Bill last month.
Murder Among the OWLS is the 14th "Sheriff Dan Rhodes Mystery." Back in November, Bill put #13--A Mammoth Murder--to the page 69 test.
The first Dan Rhodes novel, Too Late to Die, won the Anthony Award for Best First Novel.
