Between the publication of the arguably more famous novels The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) and Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), Thomas Hardy wrote The Woodlanders (1887).
The Hardy scholar Penny Boumelha of The University of Adelaide, who wrote the introduction to the Oxford World Classics edition of The Woodlanders, generously agreed to apply the "Page 99 Test" to the novel.
