Ten of the best aliens in science fiction

For the Guardian, John Mullan named ten of the best aliens in science fiction.

One entry on the list:
Martians

In HG Wells's The War of the Worlds, a cylinder arrives from Mars, out of which crawls a strange being. No one could imagine "the horror of its appearance. The peculiar V-shaped mouth with its pointed upper lip, the absence of brow ridges, the absence of a chin beneath the wedgelike lower lip, the incessant quivering of this mouth, the Gorgon groups of tentacles".

The War of the Worlds movie starring Tom Cruise is one of the Independent's five turkey adaptations.
