Five top children's book characters

Clara Vulliamy is the author and illustrator of numerous series for children, including the Martha and the Bunny Brothers series, Muffin series, Lucky Wish Mouse series, and The Bear with the Sticky Paws series. She lives in London, England.

One of Vulliamy's five best children's book protagonists, as told to the Telegraph:
Clarice Bean from ‘Clarice Bean, That’s Me’
by Lauren Child

The arrival of this girl completely altered the topography of children’s books and after it there was no going back. Written in the first person in a new authentic voice, Clarice Bean is funny, critical and often indignant, showing family relationships in a refreshingly unsentimental light. I remember picking up this book and turning over the first page: to read:

“This is me Clarice Bean

(I haven’t got a watch so I’ve drawn one on my arm in Biro).”

I was hooked.
Read about another entry on the list.
