One of his six favorite books, as told to The Week magazine:
Ulysses by James JoyceRead about another book on the list.
I can still hear Dr. Hull at Hofstra, reading passages that opened up the inner life of Dubliners on June 16, 1904. I go back now and then to rediscover phrases like “the feety savour of green cheese” and “they drank in jocoserious silence.”
Ulysses appears on Nina MacLaughlin's top ten list of dirty old (literary) men, John Mullan's lists of the ten of the best parodies, ten of the best Hamlets in literature, ten of the best visits to the lavatory, and ten of the best vegetables in literature. Unsurprisingly, it appears on Frank Delaney's top ten list of Irish novels and five best list of books about Ireland.
