On 19 March, 1987, Ian Rankin got caught in a sudden snow storm walking home from work. He stopped off at his local Tesco to buy a steak and a good bottle of red, because he'd had a book published that day. It was a novel called Knots & Crosses, and was about a detective called John Rebus.
