Five notable faked deaths in fiction

David Nobbs is an English comedy writer and novelist.

For the Telegraph he tagged five top faked deaths in fiction, including:
In Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd (1874), not only does Sergeant Troy leave his clothes on a beach, but he does it in Dorset. Thank goodness Hardy wasn’t in a position to sue. It’s a great book, with a surprising amount of comedy in parts, but the consequences of Troy’s action, and of his eventual return, are serious indeed.
Read about another book Nobbs noted.

Far from the Madding Crowd also appears on John Mullan's list of ten of the best fake deaths in fiction and Marjorie Kehe's list of ten perfect books for Valentine's Day gifts.
