For my last few novels, early in the process, I have created a character sheet for the story, a single page with photos of how I envision my main characters. The irksome nickname for Reina, one of the two protagonists in Call of the Camino, is Velma, so the first photo I put on my character sheet was a cartoon image of the adorable bespectacled teenage sleuth from Scooby Doo.
