"Old Yeller," by Fred GibsonRead about another book on the list.
Fred Gipson captures both the voice and essence of a young teen, Travis, from Texas. The name Old Yeller is a double-entendre, describing both the ugly color of the dog's coat and the horrible noise he makes while he's barking. Initially Travis hates Old Yeller, but then he warms to him as the dog proves his worth time and again. I won't give away the ending – although Gibson does, right in the second paragraph.
